Walk to Stop DiabetesThe annual American Diabetes Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes event took place this past Saturday in Prescott, and garnered 450 participants, a 150-percent increase in walkers from previous years, said event coordinator Jim Robak.

With 10 new teams as well as more vendors and exhibits, the event provided participants with new materials to help educate and raise awareness for diabetes. Sponsors like Novo Nordisk were on hand to demonstrate some of the newest breakthroughs in technologies for diabetes management.

Robak has been involved with the organization for several years, and he is this year’s top participant, generating $2,809 in donations. To date, the 2012 Prescott walk has raised $22,348.90 for the Diabetes Association.

Hosted annually at local sponsor Yavapai-Prescott Indian Reservation, the event features a 5K fun run and .7, 1.3 and 4 mile routes for walkers. Participants in the walk diagnosed with diabetes themselves are called Red Striders and they receive special recognition along with commemorative red hats.

Children and families with loved ones diagnosed with diabetes are encouraged to fundraise and participate to raise support for ADA and raise awareness.

Anyone interested in participating in next year’s walk can contact Robak at jrobak@diabetes.org.
